Vocabulary and
Language – Making the Grade Means Making the Sales.
The way we speak, articulate, the words we use are all things that
as sales people need to be analyzed and looked at and if necessary
adjusted. The most extensive, the more exact the vocabulary used
when presenting ideas, the better able the salesperson is to
presenting the ideas in a manner which prospects find pleasing and
that in and of itself can make the difference between a missed
opportunity and a sale.
Vocabulary, Language, and time
Making sales is not just about the words that are used but also
the timing used to say them that can make the difference when it
comes to sales. The words a sales person uses defines, explains
and allows the prospective client and customers to understand
exactly what is being presented and what it can do for them or
what value it holds. If these elements are unclear, it can become
a frustrating situation, or a situation that turns into a missed
opportunity because of confusion
Reasons why vocabulary and language are so important
There are any number of ways that a sales person can learn the
correct vocabulary and language necessary to maximize their sales.
First look at the definitions, vocabulary is what is used to
define, illustrate and describe the product or services being
offered. Language is often what convinces prospects to purchase it
is how the vocabulary is put together.
Having vocabulary and language skills means that a salesperson can
spend less time in each product presentation, it may not seem like
much but a few minutes off of each presentation, phone call and
interaction can add up quickly into being able to service more
prospects. Servicing more prospects in the same amount of time is
what helps to maximize the chances for sales.
Things to do to gain better vocabulary and language
There are a few steps that any salesperson can take in order to
effectively increase or alter the vocabulary being used in order
to increase the chances of making a sale. The first step is to
list all the vocabulary that is currently being used and define
what they mean be sure that the definitions being used are
standard definitions so that the vocabulary has the same universal
meaning. There are some words, which have multiple meanings. It is
important to note this words and if possible choose a word with a
more exact or concise meaning instead. This gives a starting
place; there are usually a selection of words used for each type
of product.
Once the list has been generated consider if there is a way to
increase the list and to make the words on the list more concise
and to the point. It is important that vocabulary which could
easily be misunderstood to be altered or exchanged for words that
do not leave room for misunderstandings.
Consider how to alter the sales presentation to include the more
concise words and in and of itself to be more concise. Most
prospects make a decision in a short amount of time from the start
of the presentation. Keeping presentations short sweet and to the
point maximizes the chance of gaining that prospect as a sale.
Each industry had technical words, try to avoid these if at all
possible as they usually require detailed explanations if the
prospective is not in the industry being described.
Articulation
Finally it is important that a sales person speak clearly and
distinctly. This shows attention to detail, avoids
misunderstandings and inspires confidence in the prospective
customer that the salesperson is someone who pays attention to
detail.
